Sony shipped over 2.3 million PlayStation 5s in its fiscal 1st quarter

There is no doubt that PlayStation 5 is a powerful console coveted by many gamers around the world. Sales of this Sony equipment have been a real success, even if conditioned by the scarcity of components.

Now the Japanese company has released its earnings report for its first quarter of 2021 for the months of April, May and June. And according to the data, the brand shipped more than 2.3 million PlayStation 5s during that period alone.

Sony Corporation today announced its fiscal 2021 first quarter earnings report (April through June). According to the financial report, sales revenue reached 2,256.8 billion yen (~17.4 billion euros), mainly through electronics, music and movies. This figure represents an annual increase of 15%.

The brand's operating profit was 280.1 billion yen (~2.16 billion euros) and net profit was 211.8 billion yen (~1.63 billion euros).

In addition to these figures, the Japanese company also revealed its forecast for fiscal year 2021. The brand estimates that operating profit will increase from 930 billion yen to 980 billion yen (~7.18 billion euros for €7.56 billion). Net profit is expected to increase from 660 billion yen to 700 billion yen (~5.09 billion euros to 5.40 billion euros).

Over 2.3 million PlayStation 5s shipped

Sony also announced that it has sold 2.3 million PlayStation 5 units and 500,000 copies of PlayStation 4 this fiscal first quarter.

As for the accumulated values, PS5 reached 10.1 million units sold, while PS4 managed to ship a total of 116.4 million consoles. In turn, monthly active users reached 104 million, and PlayStation Plus users reached 46.3 million.

Physical gaming revenue was 25.6 billion yen (~0.20 billion euros), while the digital version with additional store revenue reached 320.4 billion yen (~2.47 billion millions of euros).
