The German company Northern Data specializes in HPC (high-performance computing) and mining. And to expand its business, the brand has now acquired 24,000 servers from the Block.one company. These servers are comprised of AMD Epyc processors and 223,000 graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia. As mentioned, all AMD Epyc CPUs that are part of the system total more than 500,000 cores.
According to information from Northern Data, the acquisition cost around 365 million euros, of which 195 million will be paid in installments over 12 months. Already 170 million will be paid in shares.
The company estimates that the implementation of the new system will end during this third quarter. The servers will be located in Europe, in countries like the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
With this purchase, the company thus conquers more computing power than the fastest computer in the world, Japan's Fugaku . In other words, with the new system, the processing capacity of all servers will go from 1.29 exaflops to 2.6 FP32 exaflops. Another plus is that Northern Data guarantees that all hardware will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
The company's objective is to increase its HPC activity capacity and also significantly increase its mining capacity. In addition to these, it also aims to intervene in the area of rendering, AI, blockchain and IoT for clients.
However, Nortehrn Data did not reveal which model of Epyc processors used in the servers, nor the graphics cards.
